Why Is My Oven Smoking? And What You Can Do About It
A smoking oven usually means grease build-up. Here’s how to spot the cause, and what to do next to fix it properly.
If your oven starts smoking every time you turn it on, it can be a bit alarming, and very annoying. The smell, the eye-stinging haze, the panic-grab for the tea towel to waft the smoke alarm… Sound familiar?
Here’s what’s going on, and how to fix it properly.
What’s Causing the Smoke?
Nine times out of ten, it’s a build-up of grease, fat or burnt-on food. These bits get stuck:
- On the bottom of the oven
- Around the fan
- Behind the door glass
- On the heating elements
When you heat the oven, all that grime starts to burn, and that’s what causes the smoke (and smell).
It doesn’t always happen all at once. It can build up slowly, so you might not realise how bad it’s got until your oven starts kicking out smoke when it’s empty.
Can I Fix It Myself?
Sort of, but it depends how bad it is.
You can try:
- Wiping down visible grease with warm soapy water (once it’s cooled, obviously)
- Using a non-toxic oven cleaner (check it’s suitable for your oven type and non caustic!)
- Removing the shelves and giving them a soak
BUT…
Most DIY cleaning won’t touch the really stubborn bits, especially inside the fan, under the elements or between the glass panels. These are usually the main culprits when it comes to smoke.
What a Professional Clean Actually Sorts Out
We take the oven apart safely, including the door, fan, and any removable panels, so we can get to the places you can’t reach. Then we deep clean it using fume-free, non-toxic products that actually work.
It’s not just a surface wipe. It’s the sort of clean that makes the oven look new again, and most importantly, stops it smoking.
Don’t Ignore It
Letting grease build up over time can cause:
- Smoky ovens
- Nasty smells that cling to your food
- Poor heat circulation (uneven cooking)
- And in rare cases, even a fire risk
If your oven’s starting to smoke, it’s best to sort it now before it gets worse.

Is a smoking oven dangerous?
Usually it’s a nuisance rather than an emergency: burning grease makes smoke and smell long before it makes flames. But don’t ignore it. Heavy grease build-up is a genuine fire risk, persistent smoke taints food, and if the smoke smells electrical — acrid, plasticky — rather than like burnt food, switch the oven off at the wall and call an engineer, not a cleaner.
Brand-new oven smoking?
That’s normal for the first use or two: it’s the protective factory coating burning off. Run the oven empty at about 200°C for 30–60 minutes with a window open and it will stop. If a new oven is still smoking after several uses, check nothing is stuck to the elements or the cavity floor.
